ART 101  Introduction to Art History

Course Description:

The Introduction to Art is a course that examines major works of art and architecture, from ancient times to the present, from a global perspective. This is not a comprehensive survey in the sense that we will focus on a select group of paintings, sculptures, and architecture considered illustrative of a certain period or style. The goal of this class is to provide a foundation for looking at and analyzing art and the ways in which we derive meaning from it.

This course has six modules that run chronologically through the course of history; from Antiquity to the Present and include both Western and Non-Western art. You will learn about the art works themselves, the artists that produced them, the materials used and the patrons that provided the funds for the works.

We will pay special attention to the historical and social context in which the art was produced and in turn what the art reveals about the period studied.
