ANTH 101 - Cultural Anthropology

Course Description:

This course is a basic introduction to the fascinating themes that Anthropologists come across and the range of human behavior and culture in many parts of the world. We will start with a global view on human practices related to social

organization, kinship systems and the family, local and national political systems, issues of gender, migrant communities, religion and beliefs, health issues, ethnicity and identity, and economic systems; all under the perspective of the most important concept of anthropology, culture, and in all its dimensions.

Traditionally, Cultural Anthropology has emphasized the study of indigenous, primitive and rural communities. By tradition, also, Cultural Anthropologists look at things from different angles or points of view by putting ourselves "in the shoes of another" so to speak. These traditions will be respected and followed in this course, as well as incorporating urban and global issues that naturally affect them both.
